Artifact: The Weather Project Website
TS 8 Information Literacy Skills: The competent teacher will develop information literacy skills to be able to access, evaluate, and use information to improve teaching and learning.
Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.
A competent teacher will seek to expand their knowledge base in order to help students expand theirs. Competent teachers should be on the constant look out for new techniques or technologies or uses for old technologies that will help their students learn better, and then take the time to become literate in the tool and then pass that information on through effective teaching.
Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard.
I chose a website that I made for this standard because of how I had to make the website, and because of what the website contains. I have never previously made a website, and so I had to do the research to find out what I needed to do, and then when I found a program I could use, I had to learn how to use it to make an effective organized online learning experience for my students. Indicator 8A states that the competent teacher “understands how to access, evaluate, and use information to improve teaching and learning.” And that is exactly what I did. Contained in the website is a weather unit that students access in order to get information for activities, upcoming lessons, and to downloaded worksheets or watch helpful videos. In indicator 8D it states that the competent teacher “structures instruction and designs learning tasks and assignments to reflect higher-level thinking skills.” In the activities, the students must use information gained from the lessons to complete higher-level thinking tasks, and even the final evaluation for the entire unit is something that students will have to use a lot of different skills and information to complete. Finally, indicator 8E states that the competent teacher “structures and/or facilitates cooperative learning groups as part of students' tasks and assignments.” The website, or rather the unit, requires that students be in cooperative learning groups in order to complete assignments and the final evaluation.
If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.
I believe that my teaching will be impacted by this unit by giving me yet another skill I can take into the classroom with me. I had never made a website before, but now that I have, I can help my students possibly create their own websites with which to convey information from a lesson, a unit, or even just for fun. This assignment also helped me practice putting units together and made me think about a lot of different things that go into making a unit, which I believe will also be an asset to me as I go into the field.
Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
I feel more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse society because I’ve had the experience of not knowing how to do something and then went through the process of teaching myself how to do it. Going through this process I believe makes you appreciate the struggles that your students go through when they’re learning something new and foreign to them. It may seem easy to me to multiply fractions, but for a student struggling in math, fractions can be scary, and multiplying them may sound even scarier. Gathering the information necessary to create this website and then creating the actual website itself put me back into a student’s role, and I think I will remember that during my teaching, and will be able to help my students more because of it.
