Artifact: Email to Office of Clinical Experiences Director
TS 2. Personal and Professional Use of Technology: The competent teacher will apply tools for enhancing personal professional growth and productivity; will use technology in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and solving problems and will promote equitable, ethical, and legal use of computer/technology resources.
Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.
To me, this standard means that the truly competent teacher knows and understands how to use basic computing skills to effectively communicate, research, and solve problems within the classrooms. Effective communication is imperative to collaborate with other teachers and parents, and understanding how to research using the internet is essential to professional growth. Competent teachers understand that we live in the information age, and in order to keep up with the fast pace of our students and our daily lives, we need to be fluent in technology.
Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard.
I believe that the artifact I chose, an email to the Director of the Council on Teacher Education, succinctly shows that I fully understand how to use computer technology to communicate and collaborate with fellow professionals. I think that this email shows that I fully comprehend the knowledge indicator 2A which states the competent teacher “understands how to use technology in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and solving problems.” Writing this email and then responding to further replies I think more than proves that I am capable of communicating professionally via email. Not to mention, that this is only one artifact of the thousands I could have chosen
If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.
I don’t believe that this email will in any way affect my teaching. I do however believe that it was another experience that I will take with me the next time I need to write a professional email to a colleague to collaborate on something or to get help solving a problem. Everything that you do affect how you will conduct yourself the next time that you engage in a similar activity and this email is no different. So even though I don’t think that my teaching will be greatly affected, I do believe that my professional conduct as a teacher will. Namely, how I present myself to my students and other professionals, and how I communicate with my colleagues.
Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
I believe I am more ready to teach in a diverse society because more than half of the teaching profession is about communication, and more and more it’s becoming about integrating technology into the classroom. Keeping up with the times, and continuing to gain experience using the internet and technology for professional purposes, and in the classroom will keep me ahead of the game, and my students will benefit from my knowledge and experience.
