Artifact: Literacy Center Materials
PTS 2 Human Development and Learning: The competent teacher understands how individuals grow, develop, and learn and provides learning opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.
Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.
For me, this standard is basically getting at whether or a not a person understands how to support growth in students. In order to support the growth of students from children to adulthood, teachers must first understand how it is that children develop and learn and how physical changes as well as emotional changes can greatly affect student achievement and learning. Teachers, who understand this, will then be able to facilitate learning by using activities that support both intellectual growth and allow from personal growth to happen as well. Competent teachers understand that a student is a human being, and that the learning process goes far beyond the classroom. Competent teachers help support student growth by making our teachings meaningful to every aspect of a student’s development.
Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard.
I chose this artifact to satisfy this standard because it shows that I understand how students gain language and it also shows that I can support several different levels of writers and readers. The artifact was a three part literacy center that I created. The first part is to help students practice their rhyming sounds, the orange cards are to be cut out and place face down, and students take turns flipping cards over trying to match the sounds on the cards. The green set of cards helps to students practice hearing the difference between the “long a” sound and the “short a” sound. Again, the cards are to be cut out but this time the students’ word together to sort the words into piles, and then write their answers down on a sheet of paper. The final is a book bag that has a different theme every week, and students take the bag home each week throughout the year. The bag has different books in it for all levels, worksheets to fill out, a toy for the students to read with or play with and a note to the parents explaining the book bag for that week. Indicator 2A states that the competent teacher “understands how students construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop habits of mind. “ I believe that by having the students practice saying the words out loud, hearing their partners say the words, reading the words and writing them shows that I understand how students construct knowledge, acquire skills and develop habits. Also, 2E states that the competent teacher “understands how to include student development factors when making instructional decisions.” I believe that I show my understanding of this by giving students many different options on how to complete work in the book bag, by writing letters, drawing pictures and also being able to read at whatever level they are capable.
If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.
I have not used this in my classroom, because I have not had the experience of being able to teach a first grade or a second grade classroom at this point, but creating something like this was certainly a good experience for me. I think I was able to work through some issues on how to think about creating centers like this. For instance, at first I was thinking to instructional, and I had to make sure that the centers weren’t just educational but they were also fun. It was hard at first to think of a game that would be fun and educational for students to work on their reading, writing, sight words etc, but naturally the more you do something the easier it gets. Just being able to go through the steps and actually have to create things like this is a great experience that I can take into my classroom now and not feel overwhelmed.
Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
I feel more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society because now I’ve had a chance to plan engaging lessons for those who are diverse learners in my classroom. Diversity does not stop with the background that you come from, it’s how you learn, it’s even in your personality, so being able to support every facet of diversity in my classroom is a must and also very rewarding. I know that I will be able to do so having had this experience, and many others along the way.
