Reflection
Artifact: Letter to Parents
PTS 7: Communication: The competent teacher uses knowledge of effective written, verbal, non-verbal, and visual communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.
Often times the teacher must collaborate in order to be able to teach the most effectively. Whether that collaboration is with parents, the students, or another teacher, effective communication is essential to making this happen. The competent teacher understands when more is needed to encourage a student’s growth, and can readily and effectively use any necessary means of communication to contact the necessary collaborative party.
Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard.
I chose this artifact to satisfy this standard because I think is shows that I clearly understand how to use communication to both my benefit and the benefit of my students. This artifact is a letter that I sent home to parents at the beginning of my student teaching, letting them know who I was, where I was coming from as a teacher, and letting them know that they could contact me if they wanted or needed too. I believe that writing this in the letter shows my understanding of the knowledge indicator 7D, which states that the competent teacher “understands the importance of audience and purpose when selecting ways to communicate ideas.” I knew the audience that I was writing too, so I chose my language and my information very carefully to satisfy my audience’s expectations. More implicitly however, is how I feel this artifact shows that I understand knowledge indicator 7B, which states the competent teacher “understands how cultural and gender differences can affect communication in the classroom.” Not all of the students that I have in my classroom as the same culture, gender, race as me, so making sure use language that was open, welcoming, and sharing a desire for them to contact me I believe shows that I want to be able to communicate with them and their student as effectively as possible.
If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in the future to further meet the standard.
Having written a letter that has actually been sent home to the parents and having gotten good feedback from it, I think that I will continue to do this. It’s always a good idea, as a teacher, to communicate often with parents and let them know what’s going on in the classroom, but sending a note to parents before the school even starts to open up the lines of communication sets a whole different tone for the year in my opinion. My understanding of this now I think will be reflected in my teaching, and my greater emphasis on good communication, not just with parents, but with everyone involved in my students’ education.
Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
I feel more prepared to teach in a diverse society because I’ve had the chance now to open the lines of communication with parents and students for myself and not having had it done for me by a cooperating teacher. The people and students that I come in contact with may not always have the same ideas, beliefs, or culture that I do, but it’s important for me to be a neutral party and let them know that I’m there to help, not to be a judgmental party, and effective communication is the key.
