Artifact: Science Lesson
TS 5 Productivity Tools: The competent teacher will integrate advanced features of technology-based productivity tools to support instruction, extend communication outside the classroom, enhance classroom management, perform administrative routines more effectively, and become more productive in daily tasks.
Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.
Today, teachers more than ever have amazing technological resources at their fingers tips to help students engage in their education. Technology in our classrooms is becoming more prevalent than ever, and competent teachers are aware of the many uses they can get out of educational technology tools. The competent teacher can seamlessly integrate technology into the classroom in order to support instruction, and also to help manage the classroom. Competent teachers are technologically literate, and they use this is literacy to better their students’ educations.
Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard.
The artifact I chose is a science lesson in which I utilized iClickers to enhance student engagement and interaction with the lesson. I chose this artifact to show my competency in this standard because this lesson shows that I know how to effectively incorporate technology into my classroom. Indicator 5A states that the competent teacher “knows advanced features of technology-based productivity tools.” The clickers that I used for this lesson are integrated into the CPS system, which assigns a clicker to a student and records all of the data that the student enters into their clicker. All of that data is then used to fill out a digital grade book, can be graphed, will show what areas the student is struggling in, and can greatly impact my teaching. Using the CPS system is an advanced feature of the clicker technology, most teachers simply use the clickers in PowerPoint’s to help engage students, and never use the grade book or graphing features because of required setup time.
If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in the future to further meet the standard.
Because I have used this lesson in my classroom and had the opportunity to use the iClickers and the CPS program in my practice my teaching in the future will be greatly impacted. I have seen the great advantages that the clicker system can bring into a classroom, not just for students engagement but for classroom management and organization as well. Should I be in a school where there isn’t enough money to pay for a CPS system for my classroom, then I am fully prepared to write a grant to acquire one. Technology like the CPS system is expensive, but I will try to further meet this standard in the future by integrating not only CPS into my future classroom but as many other kinds of productivity tools as I can.
Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
I feel more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse society because I feel like technology can bridge a gap between diversity. It’s something that we all have in common, it’s something that we can all understand and use to better ourselves, and it’s something that most everyone uses every day. Students from all backgrounds and learning styles can use an iClicker, and enjoy using them. You can bring technology into any kind of classroom, and have it work wonders for your students.
