Artifact: PowerPoint presentation on Dr. Jean Piaget
PTS. 7 Research, Problem Solving, and Product Development: The competent teacher will use computers and other technologies in research, problem solving, and product development. The competent teacher will appropriately use a variety of media, presentation, and authoring packages; plan and participate in team and collaborative projects that require critical analysis and evaluation; and present products developed.
I believe that what this standard really wants is for me to demonstrate my competence of not only working with technology, but also with a group. In the teaching field, you have to be able to work with other teachers and your administrators, not just your students. Group work is a necessity in education, not just for the students, but for the teachers as well. Being able to competently do research, put together a presentation, and actually give that presentation are all very important skills to an educator, which is what this standard really wants me to demonstrate.
The artifact that I chose is a group presentation that me and several others put together to present to our class about the controversy surrounding Jean Piaget’s theory in our school system. I believe this artifact truly demonstrates this standard because I had to work with a group to complete it, I also had to put forth effort in researching the topic, and lastly I presented with my group not just with a PowerPoint, but by implementing another kind of technology where we could get our classmates opinions with the help of iClickers.
In the performance indicator 7C it says that the competent teacher will be able to “develop simple hypermedia and multimedia products that apply basic instructional design principles.” I have succeeded in doing this by creating a PowerPoint and also by the iClicker technology that was implemented during our presentation. In indicator 7G is says that the competent teacher will “uses a computer projection device to support and deliver oral presentations.” This was accomplished by using projected PowerPoint to give our presentation.
I believe that this helped me to grow as a teacher because it allowed me an opportunity to get some real group work done on something that was actually relevant to my teaching. Having to work closely with my group members to complete a project has allowed me to more fully understand just how important it is that teachers get along and work well with one another. Interpersonal relationships in a school are part of what makes them great and safe places for our children to get good educations.
I feel that I am more prepared to teach in a diverse community because I have knowledge of how to use a technology as an educational tool in the classroom. This standard requires group work, and technology and both are necessary to becoming a good teacher. Also, if I were to be placed into a school that had littler technology or technological support, I know that I would be able to help the school with possible technological needs, and that I would be able to work competently with my fellow educators to get the job done.
