Reflection:
This sample set was taken from a social studies unit that I taught during my full takeover. The topic was the history of Champaign, and the first sample was taken at the beginning of the unit after a series of “front loading” lessons took place. The second sample was the final project for the unit, which was a poster that commemorated the 150th anniversary of Champaign. This student is a higher achieving student, and so in the KWL chart, you can see she wrote more than she needed too. The assignment only stipulated that she write 3 things in each column, but she chose to write 4. In the final project she chose the image of West Side Park statue “A Prayer for Rain” and she took great care in filling in all of the white space on the page and created something that could look professional.
This sample set shows progress because of the image that she chose for her final project. In her KWL chart she gave a lot of good information, but it was information that most everyone in the class gave, interesting but common. She asked good questions, and most of those were answers within the first few days of the unit, but her final project to me really shows she learned something. West Side Park is the oldest park in Champaign. It used to be a place for cattle grazing, several well-to-do families lived around it, and it was known as “the commons” because of its use as a city meeting ground. This student learned all of these things and more about this park, so when she was given the project to choose an image that was historically representative of Champaign; the park seemed like the best choice. Furthermore, she didn’t just choose West Side Park, she chose to focus on the statue, which was a gift from a wealthy couple that lived in the city. I feel that this poster shows growth and understanding of the material that was given to her on a deeper level than a test might have.
